The Kentucky Department of Education’s Equity Playbook

Overview

The KDE Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Team has partnered with engage2learn (e2L), an education consultant firm, and Kentucky’s regional educational cooperatives, to lead this work. The Equity Playbook provides district and school leaders with personalized coaching on evidence/research-based practices, content and resources to address opportunity gaps in one or more of the following areas:

  • Student achievement

  • Utilization of funding and resources

  • Disproportionality relative to student discipline

  • Culture and climate

  • High effective staff and high-quality instructional resources

At the center of the Equity Playbook is personalized coaching for each participant. Research shows that coaching is one of the most effective approaches to improving student achievement (Kraft, Blazar, & Hogan, 2018). The seminal work of Joyce and Showers (2002) found that coaching resulted in higher transference of knowledge than other types of professional support. Participants in the Equity Playbook will receive both personalized coaching, as well as gain coaching skills to help coach others in their school/district.
